It's because they are preening for that metal rooster you've got hidden in the corner.

HA HA!!! That's Rusty their mascot rooster. I can't have roosters where I live but I wanted them to have someone to watch over them so I brought him home. His white tail attracts bugs and the hens peck at them so while I'm out there I'll frequently hear this "twang" as they peck at his metal tail. Makes me laugh every time.
