What is this chicken thinking?

Your hen should look after the chicks like they are her own. I would keep them separate from the flock and when they are old enough that the mom doesn't want them anymore then put them all with the flock with places for the chicks to hide.
I had two broody hens once and I was taking care of a baby robin. When I put the Robin near one she would puff up and treat it like her own chick, she even sat on it in the nest but Robin would get too hot. Her and the other broody would fight over Robin because they both wanted to be the mom.

I forgot to say, it's best to do it asap so the chick will think she is the mom and so they're not afraid of her.
Let us know how it goes!

Thank you guys so much! I have a good waterproof protected coop but no roosts, I pile hay in there and they all sleep on the floor except the dominant hen who perches in the doorway. my GLW has been broody for almost two months. She used to be the biggest one but now she's so skinny. I cut grapes and she's ferocious and attacks my hand when I go to get her eggs, and I stick half a grape out when she attacks and she stops and eats the grapes. Then she puffs up and screams at me and it starts all over again. I feel so bad for her, she wants chicks so badly. I try to take her out and put her in front of food but she just lays there for a while, gets some water then it's back to brooding. She screams at the other hens and they are scared of her.

I go in the backyard to check on my hens, and this is what I see!! Sweet pea on top of fire rose and puddles!

Hey everyone I apologize this isn't a funny post but I've posted this on a broody thread and I've received ZERO replies. I'm hoping someone will help:
Help please. I have a broody GLW and I want to give her 2 new chicks tonight. I'm going to shut the rest of my hens out of the coop just for tonight so the mama hen can bond with the new chicks alone. But what about after that? Will she protect them from the other hens at night after that? Will she lead them into the coop at night to sleep? I've never done this before and I need advice. Do I HAVE to keep them separated? I don't have much more room. All I know is to sneak in at night and replace her eggs with the chicks. After that I'm clueless. (There's no rooster) help please?

This was how I introduced my chicks to mature birds. I bought a GoGo pen and adapted it for my purposes. This device has come in handy several times.

You can use any type of wire cage and break it down to suit your purpose. For smaller chicks I added either hardware cloth or chicken wire to prevent escape.

These chicks were in isolation and I used a rolled up tarp and chicken wire around the base to prevent escape.

This is the same apparatus being used as an hospital cage.

Hope this gives you a few ideas. Glad you stopped by!
