What is this chicken thinking?

Your poor baby:( l had a scare when I got off work two days ago, l went to check my girls, only to find massive amounts of feathers all over the place. My first thought was a fox had killed one or more of my girls. So I called them, but they all came running and they all seemed fine. Until l saw my Black Betty. She looked like she had been plucked! Even worse, when I picked her up, feathers were falling out by the handfuls. She has never lost her feathers like that. So I'm glad to hear that's normal. I was worried something was wrong. I have to agree with others here, why do they molt so bad in the cold?

She's always done the ugly molt. But not this ugly. This is by far the worst. I'm honestly FREAKED out about how she might molt next year. Course, I'm not sure it can get any worse. She hates being touched and won't let me get near her so I'm not sure how I'd bring her in and out of the house. But I might just put her in a dog crate for two weeks in the house next year. I don't think I can stand to watch her go through this again.

What are they thinking?
