Why are horses afraid of tarps?

Horses are prey animals. In their world everything is out to eat them. It is up to the human partner to convince the horse to trust the rider on his back. Tarps are especially frightening in that 1) they move unexpectedly 2) Make noise when stepped on 3) touch the hooves, legs and underbelly which to a prey animal means instant death.

Riders, on the other hand, are pray animals. We pray every time we get on a horse.
