Labs make awesome hunters!! Mine tries to be a rabbit/varmint/bird hunter but we don't let him do much more than herd cattle
He was trained with a rolled newspaper (never touched him, just shown to him) and treats. With the animal hunting, it's just a matter of teaching him that what he catches isn't a treat. I would try once in a while with a stuffed toy first, like those ducks with little to no stuffing. Throw it and follow him as he retreives it. If he starts to mow down, show him the paper but don't touch him with it. Might work, might not, just an idea LoL
There are a ton of "how to" videos on YouTube. I just did a search on "training border collies" and see almost 2000 videos already. I go to a lot of highland games every year. Border Collies are always there demonstrating their skills with sheep, ducks, etc. They are very smart dogs and live to work, and love doing it. Good luck!
Got yerself a piece-o-possum there for sure! Good pups to get the scent, each time they bring back dead predators or dead predator bits give 'em a treat. Reinforce good behaviors and you should be set with a couple of good flock protectors!
I don't know why - but reading all this I got an imagie of a Border collie pup changing a light bulb, and the lab holding the ladder. Sounds like a good pairing. But pictures would be better.
Here is a picture of the Border Collie doing what she loves to do for me, herding my roosters. Her name is Maggie:
And here is a picture of the Lab, his name is Chase. He is a gorgeous Black Lab, his dad was a beautiful 120lb Black Lab so we are thinking he should get pretty big:
