What is this hen noise?

I'm sure that it's the sound of contentment. I have a few really tame birds who invite themselves into the house and make a low purring noise after they have had their treats and are settling themselves down somewhere (hoping to stay in).

My chickens do this too so don't worry. It's perfectly normal

Mine do it when they dustbathe, to me at those time, it feels like a sound they make when they're in pleasure. XD
Mine also do it when there is another bird around and the bird is calling. My chickens stand frozen on the spot and here was how the conversation went.

Bird: Caaaaaw!
Chicken #1: Purrrrrrr
Bird: Caaaaaaw!
Chicken #2&3: Puurrrrr
And so on!!

Yes, I first noticed the purring sound a few days ago while our 18 week old Jersey giants were getting into dust bathing in a big way. One girl had dug a hole a bit bigger than she was so that she was below grade and lying on her side quite still, purring continuously like a cat. I was hoping that this heralded egg laying!
