Hello, all. My almost 2 year old red star hybrid went broody a few days ago and while I was handling her, I noticed the tip of her outer toe is blackened.

I try to keep an eye on all my chickens' feet to watch for signs of trouble , so I can't imagine that this is more than a week or so old. I also took pains to avoid frostbite this winter and it's been reasonably warm the last month and a half or so.

If anyone has any advice on treatment, it would be much appreciated! Thank you!

How is your hen doing?
She's doing okay but it appear that the affected part of the toe fell off. We figured out that she actually had a cut on the underside of the toe. Last night we treated it with hydrogen peroxide and antibacterial ointment and today there's a stump. I'm keeping a close eye on her to make sure she's okay. Fingers crossed

Sounds like circulation got cut off to the toe. I wouldn't use hydrogen peroxide, it kills the healthy tissue. Other than that, make sure she's walking okay and she'll probably be fine. :)
