what is this variety of ameracauna called?

An ameraucana is a purebred chicken that has certain color patterns that are recognized. Ameraucanas lay only blue eggs. EE's are ameraucanas with colors that aren't recognized or ameraucana crosses. EE's don't have to have muffs or beards (I have one like that) but most do. EE's can lay green, blue or sometimes pink eggs. I hope that helps a little bit!

THanks everyone!

Actually the eggs were sold to me as EE's -- I was just confused & thinking EE's were the same as Ameracaunas.

Can anyone enlighten me on the distinction? Are there different color patterns of EE's, & do they have names?

The main distinction between an "ameraucana" and your bird is that ameraucana's only come in certain colors. If a bird has all of the recognized traits (beard, pea comb, shank color, etc.), but is not a specified color, it doesn't count as an ameraucana.

Here is the Ameraucana Breeders Club website address. www.ameraucana.org

In my opinion, it is quite ridiculous that, according to the purists, if you breed a purebred white ameraucana with a purebred wheaton ameraucana (or any two purebred lines, for that matter), the result is not an ameraucana because of the coloring. It is an easteregger.

Go figure!

Edited to add: I have the same type you have. She looks just like yours.

Thanks! So if the coloring is not recognised, that makes it an EE even though it might lay perfect blue eggs? Okay, so mine (see my pic at the first page of this thread) is an EE because of the coloring? She lays lovely blue eggs, and was sold to me from Ideal as "Ameraucana". But then again, Ideal says that "EE" is just another name for ameraucana...

Its not just the color patterns that you look for.
Almost all hatchery "ameraucana" are cross bred with other breeds.
You can have a white EE, it will often contain major faults besides feather coloring. Yellow skin, yellow beak, and green legs that most EE have results from crossing a white skin/ blue legged breed with a yellow skin/ yellow legged breed like Rocks or RIR. Type is another thing to look for. Do to be being mixed if you bred two white hatchery EEs together it unlikely that you will get all white EEs.

Um, okay, so if it lacks any of the features of the ameraucana standard, that makes it an EE? What are all the standards?
All varieties (if the bird is a different variety than what is listed that makes it an EE {?})
Leg color: (I'm guessing green?)
skin color:
Special features (beards, muffs, comb type, toes, etc.)

Please help, I've been curious about the distinction between EE's and Am.'s for a long time!

Thanks to everyone for this great info, & to those who posted pics, especially the ones that look exactly like our beloved Chipmunk! (named for what she looked like as a chick).
