What is this?

Well I’ve seen something similar and thought it was ice fishing related, like for grabbing a big toothy pike out of an ice hole... but that might have just been an assumption on my part....

.... kind of like when you meet your 3rd cousin Edna at the family reunion and assume she was born a lady, and only realize after someone tells you, that she used to be cousin Eddie.

... but maybe it’s just for getting a fish from a boat kind of like a gaff hook or since it’s sharp and closes maybe like a gig?

I feel like it’s for getting hold of a fish, but I don’t quite see how it works. :idunno

I did not understand what you mean with something ice fishing related....It could be used for what you said....

I will give you the win on this....it is used to "trap" fish. It is called a spring loaded fish trap if you look it up.

Very interesting... not how I was imagining it working...but more clever.

I feel like this is something I’d have seen in Canada or the UP of Michigan in a display with wooden fish decoys, etc... but I can’t recall for sure

...so “spring loaded fish trap” search gave me a lot of results showing lots of mechanisms with a ‘pull’ type trigger where a fish bites a baited hook and then when it pulls the spikes close on it...

But there was one picture of a thing like yours, and I was able to follow it and find more...

Studying the pictures yours looked like it would have a ‘push’ trigger.... but I couldn’t see the spring or trigger mechanism... being on pole suggested a gig, or gaff ... but it still didn’t make sense to my head...

Then I found this video and realized the springs are the flat ‘struts’ attaching to the jaws... (I kept thinking yours was just missing parts)... a little slow but I get it now!

For others....Skip to about the 2 minute mark to see how it works:

Also I just saw this:

That’s amazing they still make and sell them.

I would have thought PETA would have seen them outlawed by now.
