Hi everyone. I have a hen, who is about 6 months old, Give or take. Over the last couple days I have noticed she seems to be a bit sluggish. Eating and drinking and pooping normal from what I can tell, but as of last night she was on the floor, not roosting. So I decided to catch her and inspect her closer. I have discovered a large, swollen, red and hot wound? Under her wing, close to her chest. It is a large mass underneath and the wound is necrotic looking. She doesn't seem to be in pain or anything tho? Does Anyone know what this is? How and If I can treat it?

Chickens hide their pain well. If she’s not roosting, that means there’s something wrong. Separate her from the rest of the chickens. The wound doesn’t look knew, and it isn’t bloody, but chickens have a tendency to peck at others gashes/blood and will only make things worse. @aart might can help with this. I don’t know how it happened, predator seems likely at the same time it’s unlikely. You never mentioned any dead chickens/missing chickens, and predators don’t usually don’t leave without killing something.

100% not a predator issue. I honestly have no idea what caused it. and I agree it definitely isn't new. Its only been the last 2 days that's she's been acting off and I discovered it. The other chickens aren't paying her any attention either, I don't think they know she is injured as its very well hidden. But separating her is a good idea. I have no idea how to go about treating it or with what tho

Does it stink?
Describe the 'mass' more...like a large(how large) lump under wound?
First thought was maybe a spur wound from a cock/erel treading, due to the location.
But really not sure.
First thing to do would be to clean it with a good saline wash.
@Eggcessive and @Wyorp Rock are much better at wound care than I.

No smell and doesn't appear to be infected immediately under the wound itself. But. I'd say a good 5 inches diameter around the wound is very swollen and hard and red so, I think its a fair assumption there's some infection going on

A tumor might also be a possibility. There does seem to be a cut going through it though. Under the wing is a common place for spur injuries. So, I would just clean it with some disinfectant (chlorhexidene 2%, betadine, etc.) and apply some plain antibiotic ointment twice a day. Hopefully, it will start to heal and shrink in size.
