What is this?

So, the guy we hired to help us clean all the junk off of our property surprised me by cutting up that fallen tree and then bushhogging that field. My kids wanted to be helpful and rake up the cut straw and put it in the compost and I had forgotten all about the vine having strangled that tree. Two of my kiddos got itches bad from gathering up the straw where that tree had been laying. Poor kiddos! I wonder how long it will take for that to dissipate from the ground there.

well, both those vines I mentioned would be very toxic to eat, even for livestock. There can be contact dermatitis from the sap. Really bad itching from your description could be also from chiggers, mites, who knows what in the straw. I don't think it is at all persistent in the ground. Other than the (&)(* things are so hard to kill. The roots go down really deep on trumpet creeper. Its all over our garden, I keep digging it up every summer.

Only the two who gathered straw where the tree had been got the itches and some things I read on the cow-itch vine said that the reaction is often the result of dust created from cutting the vine. It could have been something else, of course, but I figured it was the most likely culprit given all of the circumstantial evidence.

I will keep an eye out for new vines in that area. I've only ever seen them on trees around here. Do they grow without something to hold onto? That was the only tree in that field. The poor field looks all naked now.
