What is This????

This chicken math is crazy. Don't try to research it in a textbook cause it ain't in there! Don't try to understand it cause you'll get dizzy. Definitely do not try to explain it as someone's head may explode. My advice?

Just go with it!

I went to the feed store to get 12 pullets....well chicken math got me and there are 13 reds because one was a freebie they didn't think would make it, she did, I have 6 black sex links, 3 barred rocks and 2 black cochins, not couning the 9 EE's and 2 roos I just put in the coop yesterday, they were my first hatch Jan 23. So yeah I ORIGANNLY was going to have 13 total chickens period, I now have 32!!!!...how this happened is beyond me at least my DH finds it funny because I am usually such a planner and follow through with what I plan.

Ok, this is deeply hilarious because I participated in Chicken Math unwittingly.

In February I finally decided to take the plunge and start chicken ownership. The line of reasoning for how many Golden Sex Links to get went as follows:

"Well gee, how many should I get? I'll probably only be able to eat 2 chickens worth of eggs personally, but I know that some people at work have expressed interest in getting eggs too, so maybe I should add another bird. Ooo, I've also heard that some can die or be a roo instead, so I'll get a fourth just to make sure. Also, I've had my eye on the barred cochins because they're so darned cute, I'll play chicken roulette since they don't sex them and hope I get a hen."

This is how I got from a small flock of 2, to 5. Glad to know I was following a mathematical law!

Newbie chicken math -

My daughter wanted to do 4-H. Fine....our first number was around 6-8 pullets. Then we looked at the catalog and decided that maybbbbbbe 15 to get all the breeds she wanted. However, they didn't send three of the ones we ordered so we ended up with 12. Well, hell.....we planned on 15 so off we go to a small, quaint little feed store that have three of the varieties I actually wanted (Dorking, Wyandotte, Deleware). But THEN...I still didn't have the cochins I wanted....so I found another place that had those....and you can't just get one little one cause it will get lonely on the way home...so we another cochin and two EE's to keep it company! =-)

Chicken math! It's much more fun then regular math...
