Snakes are classified as non-game animals and are
protected by Utah state laws. A person cannot collect or
possess a live wild snake without receiving a Certificate of
Registration from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
With human or domestic pet and livestock safety concerns,
a venomous snake may be killed without a certificate.

Then I guess your extension service is wrong about killing snakes.

C&R, we aren't slamming you for what you are trying to do, we're just trying to make you aware of what you are doing and what could happen. You will get lots of conflicting advice and opinions. You seem like a pretty intelligent person. Use the power of the internet and go to the agencies involved like fish and game. You should get the best information there. It seems that most of us here don't do that. We use second and third hand information like so and so said. People will also say something is legal, it might be legal where they live but not where you live. Just because someone in a different state shoots birds "all the time" doesn't make it legal. Just because everyone in your area kills the snakes doesn't make it legal. Like someone else said, just because someone works in a zoo doesn't make them an expert.

I understand you getting overwhelmed. It sounds from your posts that you are young. If that is correct then you don't have the experience or knowledge to sort through what everyone is telling without getting overwhelmed. Most of us want to help but we often don't have the right information. That is why I'm advising you to go to the proper agency.

Good luck to you and the cormorant.

COME ON! seriously this is that big of a deal that we have to coax and baby this guy for helping an already tame common bird!? I don't give a rats a** about fish and game when it comes to one bird and a decent person helping it out...they're so screwed up like every other government agency...who really cares!!!??? its one juvenile bird who doesn't want to leave, apparently already was a pet and can't properly fly...the guy hasn't done anything that will affect the species as a whole and if its sick its going to affect the other birds just like any other wild bird who is sick that is nearby would, its his decision to make the choice and take the chance. He doesn't have to listen to anybody.

Hey, here is an idea, why don't you uthenzie the bird right now and save it the trouble of being eaten by predators, starving to death in the wild due to lack of natural adaptation or before it costs you money in fines or us money in taxes so the completely backward government departments and their pensioned employees can pay you multiple visits, fine you and eventually uthenize the bird anyway. If everybody is making such a huge deal and you seriously care about what they say, thats probably the best route...silly huh? But its probably illegal to kill it too, run over it with the car maybe? Sorry to be so graphic but I'm making a point. Unless its endangered (which I gather it isn't) don't give it to an agency , that will cost us all money down the line.

Can people stop giving him grief and well meant guidence about a common bird who is happy where he is? The poster just wanted to know what species the bird was, what he does with it should be up to him. And age has nothing to do with the ability to understand or recieve advice with maturity and candor... some people, regardless of their age never develop the capability to use common sense and reason, let alone interpret advice in an unbiased, indifferent manor.
Sorry if I sound agitated, I just think worrying about or getting governmnet agencies involved is a total joke unless the species as a whole or in a large part is being affected or its endangered. I don't want my taxes or any private organizations effort going toward all the paperwork, time, effort and expense for one common bird who would be otherwise dead or could live happily where he is...There are too many other important things government should be doing.

You pro government interaction guys should read some early books on government and logic, try John Locke's 2ond treatise on Government...
Sorry for the tone, I can't help it sometimes, I'm only 25 but I have 2 colege degrees if anybody wants to patronize me. Can we get back to talking about ducks now?

Now I'm done.

I agree.

Also I'd like to point out ,that perhaps working with hundreds of species at a Zoo can make one an expert. I'd love to see one of you successfully raise baby birds of paradise ,or successfully acclimate marianas fruit doves to captivity ,or pioneer the captive care for a never before kept species.

I agree completely with you two! Thanks for understanding.

Wow, I am impressed. Only 25, two college degrees and you don't know that it isn't a duck.

I'm 56, have three college degrees, one in biology and a masters in International Relations. I work as a wildlife biologist for a federal agency so I can understand your anger even if I don't agree with it.

I have no college degrees and am retired, but I know when a thread needs to be closed for fighting.
