What is this?

This started sprouting in the yard near the garden last month. I thought it was 2 yellow squash plants. Today... those don't look like yellow squash. They don't look like zucchini either.

So did the ducks create a new veggie for me? What is this?
I have a third plant growing now near the shed.
Maybe I won't have to plant a garden next year, just let the duck poop grow and see what I get!

I have in my garden:
zucchini
yellow squash
watermelon
spaghetti squash
tomatoes
peppers
cucumbers
okra
broccoli
cauliflower
bok choy
corn
lettuce


Nothing that would grow round.
It looks like a squash leaf.
It looks like a round green squash, but how??? Where did it come from - some other bird dropping by and planting things with their poop?

I think it could be a wild cucumber. It grows to about 2-3 inches and then turns yellow when it is ripe. I don't think you can eat them really. We have had these sprout up in our gardens before.

It's some sort of cucurbit, probably the offspring of a hybrid melon, cucumber, or squash you ate last year. Store-bought, and many farm-grown, cucurbits (melons, squash, cucumbers) are usually produced from hybrid plants, which means the original seed was produced by crossing the pollen from one breed of plant with another breed. What you end up with is high genetic variability, and the seeds of the subsequent plant can turn out all kinds of weirdness.

Like the weirdness you got right there.

that is a zucchini plant, but looks like it is crossed or hybred. so that means it is from seeds that fell out of a zuchini plant from last year. let it grow fully and see what it turns out to be.
