What is this?

Do you have any ivermec pour on? if you do apply 1/2 cc at the base of the neck and 1/2 cc at the base of the tail repeat in 10 days.
do they have a place to dust bath like fresh dirt? this is real important to birds like this, it is how they bath hence it is called dust bathing

You can make an area with fresh dirt and add some poultry dust to the area and this will also help keep the mites off of them. pot ash sand and peat moss is a great additive or as a bath also if you have some around

PS i found the photo i posted by typing in feather mites so yes that is what they are

Yes I do o have that medication. I'll get on it now! Thank you so much! Will the DE help? I do have a dust bath in the coop I add DE in it and lord knows around my yard

. I also go around and put DE in the areas ther prefer. However, it's been storming here for a week or more and the dust bath in coop is now wet. Along with the whole yard. Perfect timing now that it's dark. I do have my coop covered but never thought to move dust bath area ugh! Thank u soooo much ! When it rains it pours. Hopefully I can get the few unhealthy hens back On track over next 6 weeks.
I did go pull a feather here it is
400
ps I checked the other ladies and besides a goofy butt on one. Who I will clean up tonight no one else has them.

PSS should I be throwing away eggs for 19 days after dose ?

Farmers and folks in my area will tell you DE is no better than Fairy dust and it is bad for the lungs, regular agriculture lime work great to dust a coup and run , i have been using it for years in my ground brooders .

Feed them eggs to your dogs if you have any , i myself would not worry about it but that is just me, i get it on me anyhow when i treat my birds in the spring so it gets absorbed in my skin just like the birds
wink.png
only thing i ever noticed is i get a metal taste in my mouth sometimes after treating the birds but it does not last

I made dust bath area in one of them wader pools for my baby birds in the ground brooder using peat moss, sand and ashes from the wood fires and they love it.

Just an update for these hens in this thread, all the three hens recovered, thank you a lot for your help, the first bronze hen recovered even so i don't know exactly what her problem was, i got a spray for mite for the two hens with mites, it worked well, and vet suggested to use it monthly after that.

This is the spray, http://www.nepigeonsupplies.com/images/cart/0313 Natural Spray.jpg

What a wonderful dust bath area ! I was going to have my husband build something new but your seems much easier! I'll be getting one, if I can find this time of year. I have a question. A little off topic. If I feed the eggs to my dog will it help her with lice and worms? We are getting 6-9 eggs a day and I HATE throwing them away! Thank you so much for your help. It's very wet where we live. I feed them well and they get plenty of fun time. I just feel we are getting hit left and right! First fowl pox, then worms now mites. The fowl pox was a summer thing inevitable I resize due to the amount of flies and misquotes.

IMO Wet weather plays a big role in ailment and parasites birds get especial when contained in an area together, i believe i do not have major issues with my flock because they are always covering new ground.
The eggs will not harm the dogs and sure might worm them also my dogs are worm free and it may very well be because i worm my birds often and the dogs eat lots of eggs here , it is a staple in their diet along with spent hens and cull roosters that is why i have chickens and guineas, lots of eggs and meat to eat

I got that little pool at one of them dollar stores for 10 dollars, holds a bag of peat moss2.5 cubic feet a half a 5 gallon bucket of sand and how ever much ashes i have from burning wood,
only use ashes from wood or leaves
wink.png
never use ashes from a burn pile that might have plastic or metals burned in it and no BBQ ashes if they have starter on them when you purchased them, that stuff smells nasty i won't even eat anything cooked with that stuff
sickbyc.gif
I make my own charcoal here i got lots of trees
wink.png

I have flies and mosquito's bad sometimes but it does not last once things dry up, i have only had a hand full of birds that got pox and once it was from flies not mosquito's but i will go years and not see a case.... bugs or no bugs

nature has and ebb and flow like everything else.

Did I mention that I completely agree with you about the wet weather? And even more so now that I am dealing with peas who were obviously affected by our ugly weather earlier in the week? Pneumonia weather

It's been raining for two weeks straight and the girls have been staying in coop most of the time. Everything is drenched and flooded . I needto make them a dry dust bathing area ASAP ! It all started when the rain came. I was trying so hard to keep them healthy !!! Guess I'm learning as I go. Thank you for all the great info . I'm still not through this. I checked today still one if those ladies has worms but all other feces looks good. However a 2nd bird now has feather mites , I'm assuming from my rooster spreading it. But I didn't find anything on him as of lastnight. I went ahead and rubbed him down with DE mis the internal and external medication for mites and worms. I even had to bring in the same hen and clean her butt again. She was dirty this morning. Ugh!!
