it is a sage orange. they keep spiders away naturally.

they sell very well at our local farmers market. put it in the kitchen. they smell nice!

I figured someone on here had to know what that crazy thing was! Thank you so much, yes, the Osage Orange is exactly what it is. That is some freaky looking fruit. Don't worry, we won't eat it. We don't need anyone getting sick around here. Thanks all for your replies and links, this is really interesting.

Yep, hedge apple. In Iowa where I grew up, some folks would put them underneath their beds...supposedly, they ward off spiders.
