What is with chicken tents?

Just curious... I came to NC from FL, and I've seen these in both places (several times each place), and am wondering what is with chicken tents? They are usually triangular shaped, but can be a dome. There are usually several of them inside an enclosed pen/run area. And they usually stay seperate, like one chicken per tent. Are they a special kind of chicken that doesn't roost or something? Are there benefits raising chickens on the ground? I have thought about it and thought about it, and can't come up with a good reason why someone would raise chickens in tents on the ground? Granted, I'm new at this, but it seems like a chicken needs a safe place to roost. Anybody have ideas? Thanks!
