what is wrong with Americans today? Or is it me?

If you think we have a new American mindset of "social justice" you should try being these people's landlord! I have stories for you! Irresponsibility and entitlement issues are an understatement. I've been a landlord for a long time, but since about 2001 I've NEVER seen anything like this new breed of people now. People are cheating the system everyday. Free housing under HUD programs and working cash jobs on the side. They have cell phones, cars, computers, cable and i-pods. They are doing this openly and everyone looks the other way! I have yet to witness ANY investigation of fraud on the part of any of these state and federal social programs. They take no action at all. We are located in a middle class, rural and conservative area. Don't think these things only happen in cities!

There is no respect for my property. When the rent isn't paid I'm made to file papers, pay untold amounts of fees and have my hands tied by the courts while the thief gets away with everything. We worked hard to get where we are today but we will also STOP working to support this government and it's programs very soon. I can't see working 60 hours a week to be taxed and regulated to death to support these people and their programs much longer. In my opinion, America is in a serious decline and the US dollar right along with it. Many people I know with higher net worths are already making plans to leave for other countries. I fear for what will be left here in America in a few short years!

How about I blame them both? One for being stupid an too generous with other people's money, and the other for being so lazy they look for the easy way out. It's quite a symbiotic relationship. The bureaucrats wouldn't have a job without the deadbeats, and the deadbeats wouldn't get a free ride without the bureaucrats.

Are there any out of work electricians who could develop this idea? At first, the idea came up with 9 year old thinking about how to make money, and he thought of offering an option of turbines to pay for healthclub dues. But the technology got better so fast, a small turbine can now generate lots more energy. (Upper arm/Abs pulleys can also turn the turbines)

OR, Is it a crazy idea?

I am not going to add anything about what you've said, because I could go on and on about it.

I will say, that I hope it gets better for you and that through your hard work you are able to maintain your business or at least maintain your loan. I shut a business down last year and retired at 40 because I could no longer compete with the "undocumented workers" in my area. That hurt me in a bad way. My Grandfather started that business and I felt like I denied my children his dream. Keep your head up, vent (like you just did) and let us know how it turns out. I still do tractor work here and there to maintain some sanity.

I know someone who has 7 kids, with 3 different baby daddies. She tell sher kids to "act stupid" or "mute" so she can collect SSI checks for them. 6 of the 7 get SSI for one reason or another. Her mom, dad, brothers and sisters all live off whatever the gov't gives them. Every welfare day (around the 5th of the month), they all get in their nice new van and head to the casino for bingo night. Must be nice. Hubby has a broken back from falling off a roof last year (while working), and I am working long hours to make ends meet and to subsidize these parasites. Must be nice to sit on your butt while I have to go to work everyday. Oh, and they also smoke and buy lottery tickets. I know I cant afford those! But at least I know we have some morals and ethics. My DH refuses to apply for disability even though he should. He would rather work in terrible pain. There are so many drains on the economy. These "players of the system" have to be put in their place sometime-I just dont know how!

First of all, higher taxes and social programs don't create third world countries. These things are more common to western, industrialized nations for a reason. What would be considered poverty in this country would, by many countries standards, be considered middle class at worst. I manage to live well below the poverty line in this country (by choice I might add) and I recieve no assistance. I'm college educated, I have a nice place to live, food, heat, and even some luxuries to occupy my free time. I really don't want for anything, (although universal health care would be nice!) Does that sound like poverty to you? I agree that better priorities are needed, but the fact is, with our definition of poverty in this country even the poor can afford I-pods and cell phones, don't hate them for it.

Well, now my "crazy" idea sounds OK to me: What if healthclubs hooked up treadmills that did the same work of windmills or riverdam turbines? Give able-bodied youth something to do with their time AND generate electricity? OR, create "community service" or "work-release" programs which could incorporate an option to help generate municipal energy? Treadmill turbine turners?

Is there anybody out there who could make this happen? I see it as a volunteer situation, but given the popularity of lookin' great and bein' buff, there would likely be thousands of unemployed volunteers with the time and desire to put in 40 minutes a day on a treadmill to light up their town (and turn on their TVs, run the fridge....etc...)

This could be a healthy option for able-bodied folk, and I really LIKE the idea of streetsweeping (or ANY community service) as an alternative to the depressing obesity option; sit home waiting for a check, too depressed to do anything more than cable tv and cheetos.....

I hate everything about this thread except for this post.

Wonderful idea! Now how could it be put into action? I wish I knew!

Oh come on, anybody? Maybe I need to put a chicken on this idea, somehow. Oh! How about being healthy and self sufficient? For years my DH wanted to power the TV with the exercise bike, so nobody could sit around dying in front of the tube. To watch TV, you'd have to pedal away....but we're not electricians. There must be electrician chicken people out there!

WOW!

I have been saying the same thing as of late.
People just are not being raised with Honor or Integrity anymore.
A promise made is KEPT!
I have instilled these virtues in my own children.
And they see the lack in society as well, because I tought them right from wrong.
I gave them standards to live by. Proper Etiquette, to guide them, and Morals too.
Above all else Manners.

You only get out of life what you put into it!

( I should put that on a bumper sticker!)
