What is wrong with my chicken?

We were recently given a group of good looking chickens, with the exception of this one. It's a healthy, good looking Rhode Island Red, with the exception of its vent. Why does it look like this??

Hi Nance,

I can't tell for sure from the picture, but you might be dealing with an inverted vent? If it looks like she kind of pooped out her intestines......not the best description, that's probably what you're dealing with.

This subject has been discussed many many times on this site, so i would suggest typing "prolapse" into the search bar above and reading through some other conversations on the subject and see if this helps.

Some hens have velcro back there and some have Teflon. This might just be dirty feathers. I would cut them all off with a scissors. Then wash her with soap and water. And see how she does after that.

Thank you! I've looked it up & I think that's what's wrong. Can you do anything about it? And is it okay to eat it because it doesn't lay eggs?

Sure! On every count.

Treatment usually involves using some sort of agent, such as hemorrhoid cream or honey, to take down the inflammation, and a pair of rubber gloves so you can use your finger to poke it back in there.

Some folks have great results, and it never happens again, and other times, it just keeps popping out.

This symptom doesn't indicate that anything is wrong with the meat, but she might be a little skinny since this issue makes problems for her digestive process.
