what is wrong with my hen????

Oyster shells at TSC are $5.99 for 5 lbs online. That bag will last me months, maybe a year. For my 8 chickens (was 12) I just take about a teaspoon full twice a day and toss it under a tree for them to peck at. I don't think it takes a lot for them to have what they need. I do the same with grit. I'm not sure it would last that long if I put it in a container for free ranging because my chickens would knock it out of the dish.

Why are you adding grit? free ranging they get plenty unless your free ranging them in a concrete jungle, they would probably make their own in that case pecking at it lol where there is not dirt and pebbles

I'm afraid they wont get enough. The dirt in my orchard is not sandy at all. Most of it is covered in forest type under growth -- grass, weeds and plants.

Can you go back to TSC and look in the goat or horse section for the Safeguard?
Unless they are completely sold out of both, you shouldn't really have a problem finding that in Texas.

As for oyster shell, you can buy it in 50lb bags at tractor supply for around $10.00, it's not going to be on the shelf, smallish bag, 50lbs, it's usually on the floor with the feed.
I would worm her as soon as possible, let us know what you get and we will give you directions on dosing.

So I went to tractor supple and they dont have any dewormers that chickens can use:barnieso I start calling around to see if some feed stores have anything and another tsc that is about 20 mins from me, tsc says I need to go to a feed store, but all the feed stores are saying they cant get any dewormers shipped to them so they are out of stock:he what do I do know? Also an update on my hen. She is doing really good, she is standing a lot better and she dont really try to walk if she dont have to but she is walking alot better and can get in and out of the coop on her own:thumbsup

I guess I'm not understanding - they don't have any Safeguard Equine Dewormer or Safeguard Liquid Goat Dewormer as was posted and pictured HERE?
Either one of those is fine to use with chickens. If you still can't find those, then you need to contact your vet to get a dewomer for your flock. When you see worms like that in the poop, then they need to be treated as soon as possible.

I'm glad she is feeling better.

Well this morning I went to go let the flock free range and found the most horrible thing. not the sick chicken but another one of my flock was killed last night by some predator:hitI have had problems with something taking my eggs so I have blocked all around my coop where they try and get in, bit last night by my porch I seen a baby opossum right by my feet and It ran off, I did not think anything of it because I have had a opossum around before and it did not do anything to my girls. Well this one had different plans:hit it ate her head off and ate her stomach. And some how he got through a very tiny hole and could not get my hen through it so left her there:th she was my favorite hen. She was two years old and was a mama to a very pretty hen:hit RIP sweet girl

so sorry for your loss Checkenmama109, how is the other one doing?

one thing I do is got some solar powered motion detection lights around the coop, 1 on each side, cost me about 40.00+ tax as family dollar and I love the night vision motion activated cam I got from Amazon cheap, as the night predators do not like to be seen, not so good on telling you how to trap em, but your going to want to secure it and maybe watch, it found food and will be back
