Hi BYC community,

I am after your thoughts and wisdom on two things:
1. What may be wrong with our bird?
2. What is the thing in her poop is (see photo 03 and photo 04)?

Thanks for your time and thoughts in advance.

1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Type: Wyandotte.
Age: About a year.
Weight: Normal-ish.
Comparison to others: About the same.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Lethargy. Seems tired. Low energy.
Not moving around as much as normal, nor out eating grass as much normal, nor drinking as much normal.
Sitting down more. Standing still more. Sometimes closing her eyes while standing.
Laying less (although she has laid in the last 36 hours [see photo of egg]).

Also abnormal poop. See below and pictures.

Crop seems OK.
Vent seems OK. (vet generally agreed [see below], although vet wondered if it was a bit swollen on the inside)

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
First noticed Monday afternoon (so 24+ hours)

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No. She is one of three. And the other two seem fine.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No. Nothing.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Nothing.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Normal food (layers pellets in run and grass when out) and drink (multiple fresh water sources) has been available. But bird has been eating and drinking significantly less.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Major changes. See the 3 photos.
Photo 01. The birds poop from over night in the coop.
Photo 02. A poop early in the morning when birds let out of the run.
Photo 03 & 04 "This" was found in a more recent poop (since visit to the vet). What is it? (got rid of rest of poop and isolated this)

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Care as usual. Took her to the vet for a once over. Vet sent poop (photo 01) to the lab to get it checked out.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

Have already taken to vet.
Happy with what vet said and did - but the vet is unsure exactly what the problem might be, hence sending the poop off to the lab.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
See photos

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Housing (Normal. No change.).
Bedding (No change. Visible in photo 01).

Thanks debid.

"Lash egg" was on our list.

But I guess I wasn't expecting the "lash egg" to come out in poop. I thought it was more... laid?

A couple of notes:
1. The thing in the poop is relatively small (compared to an egg). Only about the size of a beer bottle top
2. It is also very soft and squidgy when poked with a stick.

Might this mean it is still quite early in terms of the infection?

Yes, I'd think so. The more formed ones are often laid in nests which is how the name came about but since everything jettisons from the same end point, it's not unusual to have a mixture when there are problems. I had one lay a formed mini egg with pus inside. Talk about hurl-worthy!

Again, thanks for your useful thoughts.

Thank you.
I'll read them too.
I can't help but wanting to read and learn as much as possible incase I ever come across something like this from one of my chickens I will know what to do/can be done.
