what is wrong with people-----selling puppies....

Oh, I also wanted to add that my shelter gets TONS of purebreds from puppies to seniors, just on a regular basis as unclaimed roamers and owner surrenders. Right now we've got a Cairn Terrier, Springer Spaniel, German Wirehaired Pointer, American Bulldog, Boxer and a Siberian Husky. All purebred, all older pups to young adults and one "mature" adult dog. We've had GSD puppies, tons of Labs of all ages, tons of Boxers and Huskies, Shih Tzus, Lhasas, Mini Poodles, Standard Poodles, a Corgi, several Dachshunds, 3 or 4 English Bulldogs, a Sharpei, Pekingese, a Portugeuse Podengo, a Keeshond, American Eskimos, MinPins, a beautiful senior Doberman, 2 English Mastiffs, a Bluetick Coonhound, a Redbone Coonhound, many Beagles, a deaf Boston Terrier, a 6 month old Bull Terrier, a smooth Collie, a few Chihuahuas, a few Dalmations, an 8 month old blue merle Great Dane, an Aussie or 2, an 8 week old Border Collie, 3 Italian Greyhounds, a couple Yorkies, 2 Weimaraners, etc, etc, etc!!! I mean these are just off the top of my head in the 4 years I've been there. All of them were roamers, abandoned or owner surrenders. And Wallingford is not a huge town! There are tons of purebreds of all ages in shelters and in specific breed rescue groups! Petfinder.com is an amazing tool!

My father-in-law used to sell the produce from his orchard at a roadside fruitstand. There was one large dark very tart apple that made excellent pies. If he called them Hoovers (their name) they wouldn't sell. If he called the Arkansas Blacks (also their name) he couldn't keep them in stock. Same apple. Different name. Made all the difference.

This is a huge problem with no one right answer to make it better. With that in mind lets KEEP THIS CIVIL folks. Think twice before replying in an emotional manner please.

No, I mean other countRies. Middle Eastern countries, Mexico, China. They come from American territories/protectorates, too, such as Guam and Puerto Rico. California shelters receive a lot of pups from Mexico, many of which are smuggled right over a porous border. Puppies from other countries are actually a pretty big issue. Just because you can't bring yourself to comprehend the enormity of the problem because you are so close to it, it does not mean that the problem does not exist (and I mean that in the least snarky way possible).

Also, EVERY show breeder that I ever talked to online, at shows etc have a spay neuter contract, THAT makes the difference IMO

Ummmm, a "responsible" breeder has their pups' parents already lined up. Some of these people wait years for a pup. Also, a "responsible" breeder has it in their contract that the "pet" pups are to be spayed/neutered. Sometimes the pups are already spayed/neutered prior to the new parents picking up the pet. A responsible breeder will take the pup back if it doesn't work out. A responsible breeder also is usually very active in their breed's rescue group - which means that they also take in the BYB and Puppy Miller's throw backs.

Also wanted to add, a responsible breeder is breeding to improve the breed. Talk to any show breeder or responsible breeder and ask them if they actually make money at this. A responsible breeder spends more raising a litter and they have very few litters that are usually planned for some time.

One of my other pet peeves are the "breeders" of pit bulls. If you look at the back yard bred pits, you will see so many health issues, most of the "breeders" don't vaccinate as it "cuts" into their profit margins and these are the pits that usually end up in the shelter or attacking people/animals. I get so angry when I see the ads on Craigs List "re-homing" their litters of pit bulls.

.... don't EVEN get me started on puppy mills and throw-away dogs!

We see so many dogs that are given up for stupid reasons, mostly now because of moving. I help with a local small dog rescue group and we see alot of things! We do get adult dogs from a puppy mill, that are given to us to rehab, socialize and find new homes for. These are sometimes the best dogs, other times they take a long time to get "better". Some have genetic problems, some have mammary tumors, other need their teeth pulled. We do what needs to be done to prevent these dogs from being killed. Our adoption fees are considered reasonable. $200 +, depending on the dog.

Just yesterday we pulled a shih tzu pup from the shelter because its eye was popped out. It is at the vet's now, being well taken care of.

We see alot of the "designer dogs", and people will pay good money for them. We recently took in a Pug-a-pom (pug/pomeranian) that cost the owners $600 as a puppy. The pet store puppy businesses need to be stopped! People were moving and didn't want to bother with the dog in a new house! Its not the dogs fault people are so stupid!
Here's Boomer:

All our own dogs are rescues and we have fostered over a year now. Its very rewarding to see the dogs go to a new home with someone that loves them!
