What is wrong with this egg?

When I was collecting the eggs, I reached my hand into one of the nesting boxes and once my hand touched something very strange, I pulled it back out. I looked inside and saw a very unusual egg. I picked it up (which was extremely heavy), and put it into the egg carton. I brought it inside of the house. All of my girls appear healthy. It is very cold outside, below freezing. But the chicken houses are insulated and heated. Thanks!

What is this red thing attached to the egg???

I removed the thin coating off of the egg.

When I cracked the egg open, there was a perfect yolk inside.

Looks like just some shed tissue from inside the oviduct on the outside of an egg....sometimes the old egg factory hits a glitch and expels something other than what we'd like.
Hopefully it's just a fluke and won't happen again or with any frequency..

I once found something similar to the weird coating you pulled off. It was sort of papery. The white and yolk landed on the ground right beside it. My girl was very new to laying. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks in. I haven't seen it again.

I agree, just a glitch in production. When you're churning out as many eggs as these hens do, you're going to run into some funky things once in a while.
