What is YOUR favorite breed of chicken and why?

Langshans.

Absolutely the BEST breed out there!

Entirely underrated.

They are considered the dual-purpose breed of the Asiatic class. Males reach weights upwards of 9.5 lbs. while the hens weigh around 7.5 lbs.

The legs are not as heavily feathered as the Cochin and fertility issues are usually not seen due to the decreased amount of downy fluff. The combs are medium set close to the skull so frostbite is generally not a huge issue. The eggs are beautiful, some borderline purple in color. The hens are usually broody and the sheen on the blue and black birds is just brilliant. The black birds are by far my favorite as they are simply imposing. I have yet to have an absolutely mean bird in Langshans and both the males and females are outgoing, friendly and you are more likely to stumble all over them as they watch you do everything in the coop instead of worry about them running outside out of fear.

Make no doubt about it, these birds are BIG.

Brahma would be my second favorite breed with Sussex coming up a darn close runner-up to the Brahmas.

My favs are Buff orpington, Naked Necks,White Faced black spanish and White rocks.

Bo's- Lay lots of eggs and are graceful birds.
NN's- easy to pluck, lay lots of eggs.
WFBS's- Comical, and O.K. layer
WR's- LOTS of LARGE Brown eggs, not as friendly, but we are working on that!

Buff Orpingtons: My hen is large, fat, egglayin' machine and BROODY
Black Australorps: These layed all winter, they are big, and good foragers
Dominiques: Layed most of the winter, fairly big, and excellent foragers

Brahamas and Buff Orpingtons. They are sweet. The other breeds I have just go do their own thing. My buffs follow me around more than the dogs do

And when I take the dogs for walks, they come too, rofl.

I to am experimenting with breeds!. I have had Orps, BSL, Ameraucana, Barred Rock and EE. I love my Orps, buff and BBS because they are docile and friendly- they come running when I call and meet me at the gate when I get home. I know they are treat motivated, but Ive had birds that could care less! I also love that my 2 year old can throw treats to them and even catch them occasionally. They are smart about avoiding her but not scared. My roo is very submissive and HUGE. We have a big burly family friend that wont enter our yard because of his size, yet Rou has never challenged anybody- he just stands and begs for BOSS- so funny. I will say my BSL is the smartest bird. She lays almost daily and is super smart. You will find her waiting on your stairs for hand outs. She was very precocious even as a chick. I had no intention of keeping the little crossbred chick, but she was always investigating me. I thought I would just raise and home her- she never left! She is very pretty, and most just think shes a runty orp:) I am getting new eggs- so I get to investigate some new breeds:)

Pyncheon Bantams.....They are mentioned in Nathaniel Hawthorne's..."The House of Seven Gables"......they are a very old, American, and historical breed.....plus I love the Mille Fleur color and have raised breeds in this color since 1979.

Barred Rock are my favorites. Thanks to Penny, RIP. She was a barred rock chick that was 3 months old when taken by a predator. She followed me around over the whole yard. She was baby baby and would purr in my lap. I miss her. We got two pol pullets and they were not tame at all and are already taming down quite a bit. The are just sweet.

I love the look of my EE though. I think they are pretty. My Ancona is pretty cool chick too. She is funny and really pretty!

Well I have a black australorp hen, a cuckoo maran hen, a RIR hen, And a lavender seabright roo. all are my lil lap chickens and come to see me. But my other 8 that live in the same coop and were all raised from the same age act like I am there to eat them so unkown if its breed or a chicken personality so I dont wanna dis a whole chicken breed because one example is unfriendly you know.

Orpingtons by far are the best. I have 10 hens and they give me over a dozen eggs large to jumbo every 2 days. They are super friendly and loved to be held.
