What is your favorite breed of dog? & why?

My favorite breed is mutts!! Is that a breed? I love a dog with an unknown heritage. It's fun to look at them and see traits and characteristics of different breeds. My current girl, I got from a shelter and was told she was Australian Shepherd and blue heeler. But who really knows!

She is SO pretty

I love mixed breeds...i have one, and he has to be a one in a million dog! Hes so special.

GSDs - I had two. I found their intelligence more than made up for my ignorance, when it came to training

Their ability to recognise a threat, and ignore everything else was amazing. I'd love to have one again, but I've not got a spare $600

You're not going to get a responsibly bred GSD for $600. Try double that for working lines - $1000-1500 and over triple that if you want a showline dog, especially West German Showlines - $2000-$3000.

I'm completely a GSD person. I've had nothing else for over 13 years! Though I do want a dobe sometime in the future.

Isn't that the truth Chris ? The price for dogs is out of reach here (Chicago suburb) everyone and their brother wants $ 1000 for most purebred(?) pups. My friend lost his Shar pei and found the only pups available were $ 3,000. - Shar Pei have their share of health problems but even for that price no health guarantees. No he didn't buy one.

When pups of LSGD where advertised on BYC (anything else for sale) they wanted a fortune and hefty deposits (non returnable) for puppies a couple weeks old. Even a top breeder couldn't tell which ones would be best prospect at that age. BUT, before they breed they are figuring out how much $$$$ they can get away with.

Out here shelter/rescue dogs are $ 200-400- no wonder so many dogs get put down - people can't afford the money and then the vet bills that will come along for the rest of the dogs life.

there is no 100% health guarantee that nothing will happen,. but a responsible breeder tests and takes every step possible to minimize the risk of producing pups that will have an issue. Part of the reason that Shar Peis are so expensive is that they 1) generally have very small litters and 2) frequently need to deliver by c-section. If your dog decides that she's going into labor on a holiday weekend and you need an emergency c-section, you can easily be looking at $3000+ right there. Plus, the breeder then often has to take the first week off of work because the recovering mom needs to have someone available 24/7 to help take care of the pups because you can't leave them alone together and risk mom's stitches and recovery.

when a breeder takes deposits for a puppy, you aren't putting deposits on a specific puppy. You are saying "I want the puppy that will be good for XYZ" and when the pups are older, the breeder will select the pup that best meets your needs. And, yes, deposits are non-refundable because, quite frankly, people suck. The breeder calls to say "hey, pups are vet checked and ready to go to their new homes. Let's schedule a time for you to pick up your new dog!" and the buyer says "oh I changed my mind. my neighbor knew someone who had free pups so we took one of those instead" or 10,000 other reasons.

Believe me, responsible breeders aren't making money selling their puppies. They may make a profit on this litter and lose everything on the next. Even the money they do make goes into proving and producing the next generation of dogs.

I've spent over $4000 on my dog, no counting purchase price food and the regular necessities of life. It would be much much more if I wanted to seriously compete with him but I have kids at home and work full-time so it's a "fit in competition when I can" hobby right now.

Unfortunately, price doesn't guarantee a quality dog. BYBs see how much a responsible breeder is getting for their dogs and decides that they will charge that much as well. The buyer who hasn't done his research says "oh they must be good because they are so expensive"
