I guess it depend's on what you are getting chicken's for.If you are looking for fresh eating egg's there are many good breed's.I have never had Orp's so can't say about those. The best layer breed I think We had were Jersey Giant. But Sadly after last year and We had to sell everything...DH got 3 breed's of Pullet's From TSC brown egg layer's.They are just now starting to lay.I got 4 egg's this morn instead of 3 he has 15 hen's so..But they are Nice Large egg's.Actualy DD's BF and his pal are eating some as Im on here.I have babied the layer's to no end and they are doing great but I like the bantam's myself. They are basicly lap pet's and eye candy. You can eat the egg's of course you just have to crack more.I love them all though I treat the layer girl's just like my little one's and rub their backs and they follow Us everywhere.I do have a new couple of newbie fav's this time My Giant frizzle/cochin's a speckled OEGB hen A peanut silverducking hen and a few silkie's and.... and.. and..OMG

i agree completely with giant cochins, my favorite chicken is a buff chicken, beautiful, great mom and awesome egg layer, super friendly too. We had a Jersey Giant Rooster and i will warn that they are huge and he was too big for my buff orpington and tore her muscles, she later died. It was so upsetting. i love the large breeds but will never get a jersey again.
