what is your favorite dual purpose bird

I think this has everything to do with it. Why have DP birds when we've got the CX, FRs, and KK, and other assorted breeds that are fast and furious from feed to the freezer? Its pretty much standard practice to have a tractor of meat birds and a flock of layers. People are not culling for rate of growth like they did because the demand isn't there. 8 weeks, 12 weeks bingo bango freezers full and I'm done. Right? My big issue is if I'm going to feed birds all winter long (a layer flocks gotta eat) then they'd better give me some chicks worth raising to send to the freezer the following fall in addition to the year round eggs. I still have to order meat chicks and they still have to eat. Yes it might be less food consumed but at the cost per bird plus shipping, its not far off from the cost of additional feed for the DPs. Mind you this is for my own families consumption too. Just my thoughts on this.

Wow my thoughts too! I have barred plymouth rocks my family has been raising since the 1920 (My grandma started it) we raise for self only and I give away some birds to elderly to eat every year. More eggs than you will ever need too! I got a group of roo's I just culled at 16 weeks and every bird weighed 5.5lbs cleaned. My chickens pay for themselves, they are no cost to me what so ever with the eggs I sell I only have 28 hens too! This spring 2 or 3 hens will be allowed to sit on eggs this will give us meat and replacement layers for the following year and this has been going and going and going since the 20 for us! Thanks Grandma!

Im very jealous, but it does help keep the faith for my quest for a legitimate DP bird. And by legitimate I mean 5lbs carcasses at 20 weeks and 120 or so large eggs a season from a hen. Keep up the good work!

I'm sorry everyone the family rule is for self and I will not be the one to break it.

This was the rule when Grandma gave me the chicks!
Some of the family still shows the birds! I've never gotten into that, but I've been told I have one of the biggest roo's the family has ever gotten so eggs have been claimed by family! This roo is my young one and is only 20weeks and weighs 9.8lbs I'm going to post some pictures of him soon. Right now I have my best friend in his last days so I want to spend my time with him! ttyl

I just got some Dorkings from Sand Hill. They're three weeks old now. They came with a couple of white orps, too. I wanted triple purpose birds - eggs, meat, AND raising the next generation! I hear that dorkings can be a little on the slow growing side...the last chicks we had were the Rangers we got last spring, and compared with them, these babies sure are growing slow! But compared to the sex link layers before that, they're doing fine!

I don't get it, in previous posts earlier in the summer you said you got your barred rocks from a hatchery?

godsgurl4evr- I've had good luck with Buckeyes this year. I've been butchering all my culls, both cockerels and pullets, and they have been very nice. My teen son asks me cook him one in the rotisserie and one in a pot of soup every week. Barred Rocks are one of my other favorite dp for meat. They seem to fill out quicker than others, and the older hens are really meaty too.
