What is your favorite rooster breed and why?

I'd like to know this, too. I've only had one, and he wasn't very nice to people.

I took about 5 polls in different chicken sites/groups and had about 100 responses with about 90% saying the most friendly docile roo they had was a Cochin. SO thats what I ordered. He is 8 weeks old....and now I have discovered 2 of the EEs are also roos and 1 Welsummer. I have 12 girls and 4 roos. This isnt gonna be good I have a feeling.

My RIR Nigel was easy to handle and not agressive, but we have this little bantam from an assortment last year and he is downright docile so far. I think he may be OEGB.

Barred Rock!

I have a Cochin roo (nice temperment), and have had several Black Australorp roos (gentle--sometimes to a fault!), but my favorite so far has been a Barred Rock.

The Barred Rock roo that I have now was part of a male-only multi-breeds order intended to be processed into the freezer. We were only going to save one, and I had already selected another Rock (who had put on weight faster) to be the future father of all our chickens. The ones that were being processed were in an oversized kennel in the garage. I would approach, grab a roo, deliver him to my husband, help, and then go to fetch another roo. All the roos would cower in the back of the kennel when I opened the door.

I grabbed a black Australorp when this Rock suddenly turned and attacked, biting my hand quite well. The next time when I went to the kennel, he charged the door to escape, and I barely caught him. He was smart--very smart, and I admired his attempt to come to the aid of his brood-brother. Though I was worried that his smarts would be more problem than good (and I worried about him having bit me), I decided to take a chance on him. The other Rock went into the freezer and this Rock became the patriarch.

In the morning when we opened the chicken door, he would be the first to burst through--crouching and checking out the chicken run for any signs of danger. He postured like a character from a Kung Fu movie--you could almost hear the sound effects when he did it. He did this until we got too many hens for him to be able to get to the door first.

He has never displayed a bit of aggression to any human (apart from that one-time bite under duress--which I viewed as defensive). When you toss food into the run, he clucks to make sure all the ladies know there's a treat to be had. He dances and courts the hens. He's sweet and sociable.

For physical characteristics, his breed is hearty and a highly productive (eggs AND meat) dual-purpose bird, all traits that I strongly desire in the breeding of my backyard flock.

He and the Cochin are together with the hens now. The Cochin was an accident--I asked McMurray NOT to send a "free" rare breed, but apparently I got one anyway. I'm planning on bumping off the Cochin for stew, unless I find someone who wants him. His breed isn't known for egg efficiency.

Thumbs down on Buff Orphingtons for me. Four roos from the same brood took to fighting with each other. We down-sized to one, and then he became aggressive to humans. That one became chicken soup.
