What is your favorite rooster breed and why?

I had a Polish rooster--he wasn't too bright, nor did the breed have any of the dual-purpose (meat/egg) qualities that I wanted. He was skittish, but at least he wasn't aggressive.

I had a couple Silkie banty roos early on, too--couldn't stand them. Fraidy cats, and the grey one crowed constantly (he even crowed while running away from you). He didn't last long.

Lol, I have two silkies..and really not sure if the buff is a boy or girl..guess I will find out one day..hehehe

Iam thinking of having,
An amerecauna roo, bcm roo and a favorelle roo ( that one will be a banty)

And see which one seems the sweetest..just scared of spurs..lol

I haven't found one yet. I've only had Welsumer and WelsumerX roos and they were miserable. I'm not condemning the breed so much as the particular batch I have. The hens are also some of the most aloof I have too. They'd be soup if it wasn't for the XL, dark brown, speckled beauties they deposit in the nest box.

Undeterred, I'm going to hatch some SS to try and get a keeper roo. I also have some Bantam Cochin eggs on the way for my little girl. If all else fails, maybe I'll let one of the little buggers be the head man.

Don't be scared of spurs. I've found that when I walk in their pen, the first to address is the roo. Walk toward him. He should run away if he knows who is boss. If not, I reach down a pull a tail feather. The pecking order works for chickens, so I follow their example

Aw, great, so you rejected EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY RECOMMENDATIONS! <sniffle> I can tell when I'm not wanted.

But really, if you're worried about being spurred, I'd consider the Black Australorp. He's not as flashy as some other roosters, but in the sunlight, with his blood-red comb and the greenish hint playing on his jet-black feathers, he's mighty handsome.

We named ours Lucifer (I thought it meant "shining"), which was the name of you-know-who until he turned bad and was cast out.

Our Lucifer never turned bad though. He was always gentle and did his job as a rooster. We eventually lost him from infections after our sole remaining guinea hen savagely attacked him. I ran in there and managed to corner the guinea (who became soup), but the damage had been done. He never regrew his tail feathers, and was never as healthy after that. I pretty much despise guineas any more--I might keep some again one day when I can give them their own coop away from the chickens and they can practice their wild ways away from me (I like their beauty and insect control qualities), but I'm not there yet.

The Australorp hens are the sweetest hens as well. I've NEVER been pecked at by one when collecting eggs (knock on wood), not even by the broodies when I reach under to candle the eggs. At most they just growl and fluff.

The meanest has been a Americauna rooster. I will NEVER own another one!!!! I LOVE my Polish rooster. & my Maran rooster was super nice, too! My Polish is sooo pretty to watch. He is not mean & I love that!!!! He is good at what he does, mine are free range. He is very vocal, too.
