Aw, great, so you rejected EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY RECOMMENDATIONS! <sniffle> I can tell when I'm not wanted.
But really, if you're worried about being spurred, I'd consider the Black Australorp. He's not as flashy as some other roosters, but in the sunlight, with his blood-red comb and the greenish hint playing on his jet-black feathers, he's mighty handsome.
We named ours Lucifer (I thought it meant "shining"), which was the name of you-know-who until he turned bad and was cast out.
Our Lucifer never turned bad though. He was always gentle and did his job as a rooster. We eventually lost him from infections after our sole remaining guinea hen savagely attacked him. I ran in there and managed to corner the guinea (who became soup), but the damage had been done. He never regrew his tail feathers, and was never as healthy after that. I pretty much despise guineas any more--I might keep some again one day when I can give them their own coop away from the chickens and they can practice their wild ways away from me (I like their beauty and insect control qualities), but I'm not there yet.
Oh iam sorry trust me iam not rejecting your input..you see that is what I have in my brooders..I also have wheaten maran cockerels, coin cockerels..they found a home today, banty amerecauna cockerels..etc..I hatch eggs and I hatch lots of Roos..wasn't going to keep any..then thought maybe I should try
So iam not going to go out and get another roo..lol when I have so many in my brooders..just trying to figure out which roosters people have had and why they have them?
Thank u so much for your input
If I hatch austrolops or if I had..that would have been one I kept because of what u shared.hehehehe
The Australorp hens are the sweetest hens as well. I've NEVER been pecked at by one when collecting eggs (knock on wood), not even by the broodies when I reach under to candle the eggs. At most they just growl and fluff.
