What is your preference for nesting material?

I wonder how those plastic (astro turf like) nest pads work. Has anyone tried them?

we use hay, mainly because of cost and there is no problem getting it, it works fine for us

I am going to use shredded paper because we have plenty and it's free. I'm expecting my first eggs around labor day. I'm new at this so
hopefully paper will work well.

I have used shredded paper and years and find that the gals prefer it. It's free, clean and air circulates through it very nicely.

My real favorite is dried grass from the yard after it has been in the sun a few days. It is soft and smells great. They like it best too, so I think. HenZ

I prefer the pine shavings - my hens prefer the straw

the pine shavings are easier, for me, to clean out and make for a softer nest (not broken eggs).

usually I compromise and put pine shavings under their little bit of straw - just to make them think I am giving in to their whims.
