Oops! My bad. After I typed that, I was thinking it wasn't right. My brain is still numb from the busy day at our chickenstock yesterday

Marsh farm in the early 60 import the common quail from the middle east, called them pharoh. I order eggs back then, so those first coturnix can from the middle east.
He name them pharoh, because they would fly into Egypt.

He sent out a flyer were they came from, he later add the colors. Maybe some of the new color came from Japan, I know for a fact the first coturnixs in the USA were from the middle east.

Just some facts from an oldtimer that was there,at time of importing of the coturnix.

He even told how the Israelites were fed by the large flocks of these birds. Check the link, they begin laying at 6 weeks. I always wonder how they went from Pharoh quail to japanese quail?????

Maybe he add those to get the tibetan and whites, yes i remember when He added those colors also the golden all by Marsh farms.

Hi,

There are loads written about quail, where they are from, different names they have had over the years etc, read three articals and they won't say the same.

I find this intresting:-http://gallus.tamu.edu/Extension%20publications/jpquail.pdf

Says first introduction to the states was 1870 and in the 50's almost a million birds were relesed but failed as they Migrated.

Another name for these birds is Migratory quail.

I've no idea who is right or wrong in what they are really called. I only know they are refered to here in the UK as Japanese quail.

Ironsun.

Coturnix, coturnix japonica= COTURNIX QUAIL, PHAROAH QUAIL, MIGRATORY QUAIL, OLD WORLD QUAIL,EMPORERS QUIAL, KING QUAIL, OR ANY COMBO THERE OF--- INDIGENOUS TO ALL CONTINENTS BUT ANTARCTICA AND THE AMERICAS. ALLEGEDLY 1ST DOMESTICATION EFFORTS WERE IN THE JAPONESE HOME ISLANDS WHERE THE BIRDS WERE BRED FOR SONG BIRDS/ ORNIMENTALS 1ST THEN LATER MEAT AND EGGS IN JAPAN IN THE EARLY 12TH CENTURY WHEN THE EMPORER CLAIMED THAT EATING THEM HAD CURED HIM OF TUBERCULOSIS (THUS THE EMPORERS AND KING QUAIL NAMES..) THE PHAROAH NAME ALLEGEDLY COMES FROM THE FACT THAT WHEN THE MIGRATED ONCE THEY REACHED THE MIDDLE EAST THEY WERE SO EXHAUSTED THAT ALL THEY COULD DO IS REST ON THE GROUND AND RUN WEAKLY FROM ATTACKERS, THEY COULD BE EASILY COLLECTED BY HAND OR WITH FISHING NETS IN MASS QUANITIES, DUBBED BY THE LOCALS AS "A GIFT FROM THE PHAROAHS"=== FREE, EASY DINNER! COTURNIX=QUAIL IN LATIN.
THEY ARE ACCREDITED WITH BEING THE PRIMARY PROTIEN SOURCE FOR MOST JAPONESE CIVILAINS DURING WWII AS THEY WERE FOUND IN LARGE "BREEDER BANKS" IN ALMOST EVERY HOME THERE DURING THE WAR.

AT LEAST THATS THE STORY I HAVE COLLECTED FROM ONLINE AND I'M OK WITH THAT--- PERSONALLY I LOVING REFER TO THEM AS THE ROACHES OF THE QUAIL WORLD--- THATS IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY--- THEY INCUBATE WELL AND USUALLY HAVE GOOD HATCH RATES WITH LOW MORTALITY RATES AND IN 6-8 WKS THEY'RE CRANKING OUT YOUR NEXT GENERATION OF QUAIL. NO MATTER WHAT GENUS/SPECES NAME YOU PUT ON THEM, OR WHICH FOGGY GRAY HISTORY YOU SEE AROUND THEM YA JUST GOT LOVE THEM FOR MASS PRODUCTION!
