I picked up several "Japanese Bantams" from the feed store, which has always been knowledgable about their chicks. So, 3 of them died and the 2 troopers are left. I was looking through pictures and the standards for these birds and I am starting to think that mine aren't what they're supposed to be.

Chick #1 (Musashi) was all black when I bought it @ almost a week old - and I mean ALL black; black beak, black eyes, black comb (appears to be single), black down (with very, very tip of wing white), and black legs & toes (pinkish on the bottom). It's just over 2 weeks old now and the white wing tips are a bit more visible, there's some white showing up on it's breast, and a bit of grey for "eyebrows", the beak, comb, feet, toes, lobes are all still black though. I will post pics when my camera gets unpacked (moving UGH).

Chick #2 (Saki) was all white/cream (not buff) when I bought it @ the same time (almost week old) - legs are yellowish with some slate down the front, beak is yellowish, it had a tiny spot of black the top of it's head, and a touch of black in the wings. @ just over 2 weeks old, the head spot is the same, the black in the wings is definitely much, much more prominent, and the tail is now tipped in black as well. Again, the pic will have to wait.

I know, I know

agh! LOL...but hey, I thought I'd give it a shot. THANKS for any info you can provide!

The black one has shorter legs than the white, but I'd say in the medium leg range for Bantams. One that died, had super short legs - so short you could almost see them

OK, I took a couple of pics with my phone so they aren't that great, but maybe it'll help

Why do you doubt they are Japanese? Your little light colored chick looks extremely similar to my Japanese babies in both markings and how the tail feathers are developing (standing so high up). Can't tell alot about the black chick.
