We got 17 chickens in March and April (the first batch is laying!) and now l would like to get some bantams and a nice roo. l have heard that the Welsummer's are nice. Know any more? We also have trouble with the chickens getting all the growing tomatoes in my moms garden. Know a way to keep them out?

Really? l've been told they were mean. At least the hens are to new members.

The problem with letting the chickens eat it is that it is my moms garden and she would like to get some tomatoes from them.

I have had nice roosters from the following breeds: White orpington, Cochin, and Barred Rock, (so far- he's still young, but not aggressive at all so far.) The Wyandotte roos last year acted like they would be pretty nice, too- but I just couldn't keep them. My Jersey Giant was not too bad- might have been a good roo if I had kept him.
Trouble:
I have had trouble with EVERY New Hampshire cockerel that I've had, (the hens are sweet as can be.) My personal inclination is to stay away from the Rhode Island Reds as well because of my experience with the New Hampshires. Dark Brahma was pretty feisty, and so were the light Brahmas. Old English Game Bantam was a trouble maker, too! We had a Silver Polish that was fairly aggressive as well. Keep in mind that all of my experience is with hatchery stock- a private breeder may give different results. I do believe that you will have to judge each rooster on his own merit despite the breed, but some breeds will give you better chances than others.

I've heard cochin roosters are very good with people and hens.

My cochin is a very lovely rooster. He does lots of tidbitting for the girls, is gentle with mating, and has never once offered to attack a person. He stands watch in the yard all day while the ladies roam. My only problem keeping a cochin roo is that I do not want a whole hen house full of cochin crosses! I would have broodies running out my ears and no eggs!
