I'm curious as to what kind of chicken I have. I was told by the girl who sold her to me that she's a rare-breed "Rapanui", but is she really? (She was only $10.) I've had her for about 3 months now, and she's just a doll. Very sweet and docile, loves treats and sitting on my lap. She was VERY shy at first and it took me a few weeks to get her to warm up to me, but now she's very friendly. I got her to keep my baby cochin company after an unfortunate massacre in our back yard...our electric dog fence went down and our dogs had a party catching and killing the other 11 baby chicks and 4-month-old chickens we had. I found only that one baby cochin alive, hiding under the ramp to the upper level of the chicken house. She was so small and so scared, and took to me very quickly - thought I was her mother, of course. I got this "Rapanui" to keep her company when I had to take a trip out of town for a few days. Worked out GREAT, the two took to each other right away. I don't think the new bird was much more than 2 or 3 months old herself at the time.
Anyway, now I have accumulated four other birds (all Bantams) and they're such a nice little "family" - one Silkie roo and a variety of 5 misc. pullets. All spoiled rotten by me. I'm just curious as to what this girl is. Anyone have any ideas? IS she a Rapanui (or a mix of one maybe)? Or maybe a Polish mix? My guess is she's about 5 or 6 months old now, at least. Sorry the pictures aren't too clear. If it'll help, I'll take some better ones and post. She's all black - that kind of black that looks a touch green or blue in the bright sun.
