What kind of duck has a crest?

Have you ever heard of a Khaki Campbell duck having a crest? One of mine has a crazy poof of feathers on her head. We were thinking that she might have been an unintentional cross-breed of some kind, but perhaps she's just a wierdo.

Yes I had one of those too, I got mine from Ideal poultry they are sooo cute!

I think the crested mutation can be carried. if I understand this correctly (I read up on it a while back). Crested duck + regular duck = some crested ducks and some not crested but carrying the mutation. So if you have any mixed ducks of unknown origins - it is possible that they have that crested mutation in their lineage? I am not breed savvy but this is how I understood it.

Almost all stock from ideal have the chance of having the crested gene in their lineage which can pop up in later generations. I'm a bit rusty but I'll try to explain what I remember

The crested gene is a example of incomplete dominance. Ducklings that are homozygous for the gene (Received a copy from both parents) will most likely die before hatching. If the ducklings are heterozygous for the gene ( 1 copy from a parent) about a fourth will die, another fourth will be uncrested but carry the gene, and half should be crested. Now if you breed the heterozygous ducklings back to a duck that does not carry the gene you should get a 50/50 split of crested/non crested

The ones you see the most of (in my area anyways!) are blue swedish, rouen, khaki, and sometimes cayugas. There are hatcheries that sell what they call "white crested" and you can also order plain crested ducklings from some where they will send you a variety of ducklings that hatch with crests. All look different though. Some have big crests, some are small. Others stick out of the side of the ducks head verses the top. But they are all fun to have!
