i looked up immature red tailed hawk and the barring is different on the tail feathers. sorry, but i'm not sure.

Hawk shown is a red-shouldered hawk.

For me not a threat to chickens despite nesting in close proximity to free-ranging flocks. Presence of red-shouldered hawk does not mean more problematic species is not around. I have both red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, former is dominant and will at least attempt take of my birds. Latter does not even seem to try to go after chickens and seems to hunt more in woods.

Centrarchid, I'm think you're right.....on all points. I've been looking at pictures, and they do appear to be young red-shoulder hawks. And they have been nesting in the tree above and behind the coop for years. I watch the mother and father hawk come and go, flying right over my free ranging flock and they never even look at the chickens. So it's looking like it's most likely a red tailed hawk or some larger variety. That makes me feel a little better. Folks have suggested that the hawk in question will maybe move on once the chickens are unavailable. I sure hope so. In my mind I always thought our chickens would free range. I can't atand the thought of them shut up in the run, and they can't either. It's totally foreign to them to be confined. Thanks for your input.

To deter the hawks you could try hanging CDs from the surrounding trees, They don't like the bright, flashy movements when the CDs blow in the wind. Good luck!
