Coopers. Potential threat to any LF chicken. Just had one take out my EE. The hawk was 3 feet in front of me and wouldn't fly away until threatened with a shovel from inches....... The chicken was bigger than the hawk by far.

Looks like the hawk that just killed my full grown ameraucana blue hen while out free ranging. We think it was a Coopers too.

Thanks for the info everyone...
So.. its either a Coopers or a Broad-winged hawk then..

That day he didnt get anyone...
The chickens took cover for a while and it finally left...
It'll be back though... especially as the winter gets harder here.

I can't quite tell if it's a Cooper's or a broad-winged, but I will tell you that I have a resident pair of broad-winged hawks that live near me (for several years now) and they have never been a problem. They hang around and often scope out my birds, but they have never made an attempt on any birds- even when they could have easily snapped up a quick meal. Cooper's hawks, on the other hand, have proven themselves to be a problem.

Exact same experience here, kristen - that %&#! hawk wouldn't budge off my dead and substantially bigger Buff Orp until I nearly pegged it with a chunk of brick from three feet away - then it actually came back and GRABBED ME on the back of the neck as I bent over to herd the terrified chickens back into their run!

I certainly bow to someone with more wildlife knowledge than I saying your pic is a Broad-winged hawk. All I know is Cooper's are tenacious!
