I have no clue what kind of pullets these are. The couple that I bought them from said they could either be a mix of cuckoo marans (or some type of marans), RIR, or Orpington. Anyone wanna take a stab at it?

do you know how old they are? marans tend to have a full body and are somewhat large. Orpingtons are also fuller figured with rounded edges (feather shaping is softer). They have a build and tail shape most like RIR - but nothing is right colorwise - you have mystery pullets ...

According to the guy that I bought them from, they're somewhere between 8-10 weeks. They've been free ranging so I don't know if that would cause them to have a more slender physique than a more "captive" chicken. They were very flighty when I got them; they were not used to being handled AT ALL.

Given their age, it's possible they could still be one of the heavier breeds that just havn't gotten into their full swing yet. Though I don't think they are Orp or Marans because their legs are dark. Those breeds have white legs, which are dominant, that would show up in the offspring. It's more likely you have Jersey Giant or Black SL mixes of some type. Very nice birds.

I free range all my chickens as well - as long as they get enough to eat they should get the appropriate body shape for their breed

Yours have quite a bit of maturing to do so they may fill out more. I highly recommend checking out feathersite.com - you can get a feel for the breeds by looking at their lovely pictures. I would love to see how your birds mature - and hopefully you will get more opinions as well
