What kind of plants should I plant?

What kind of plants should i plant in my chickens run? How will i ensure that they will grow? And when should i plant them? I want a plant that will group plenty of leaves and nummy things for my chickies to eat!

no matter what you plant in the run your chickens will destroy it. You could plant something in a pot with chicken wire across the top so they can't dig and only get the leaves. I have some winter lettuces growing like that in my yard.

i wouldn't worry about planting anything in the chicken run, they wont even let it start growing unless you put wire fence around the plant and don't let them at it, they will eat or peck any plant to death, i have an orange tree growing in my chicken yard the only reason they havnt eaten it, is because they cannot reach the branches and leaves. when we made the new chicken yard a few years ago the area had weeds, lilys, a few hibiscus bushes, rose bushes growing in it, now it is a sand lot you would never know it once had anything growing in it.

When I built my chicken run, I had an established 4-year old rosemary plant in the area, about 3x4 feet in size. I thought I'd just leave it there & it would be OK. The chicks didn't eat it, but between them roosting on it & then scratching around the base, it was dead in a few months.
