What kind of predator attacks during the day?

hawks are very bad this year. I have had several friends and neighbors tell me of losses to hawks. The best thing you can do is not let the birds free range unless you are right, and I mean like a foot, beside them. It is a pain but as stated before hawks are federally protected.

What kind of predator strikes in the daytime? A hungry one...there are several predators that can make a pattern like you are describing. You might try buying some fresh chciken and soaking it in syrup of ipecac, and then scattering the pieces around you chicken coop. If it is a mammal taking your birds they will eat the meat and get extremely sick. I have had luck with convincing predators that chickens will make them sick.

If it is a hawk, you can report it to your local game warden and see if there is anything you can do to stop the attacks.

That is awesome that your dogs played guard dog for your chickens! I have two cockers as well and think they will enjoy being around the chickens. At least the one will, she has a huge mothering instinct and will mother just about anything. I love my cockers!

I do have to admit...... it is a sight to watch these dogs and chickens together. If the rotty gets sent out and there really are squirrels in the trees......... she bellers and whales and runs the yard on her hind feet. The chickens know she has "plum lost her mind" but the stay CAREFULLY with her. They seem to realize she doesn't look down at this point. LOL I so need a video camera!

I think ANYTHING will attack during ANY time of the day. I have had one heck of a week too! My house sets in the woods back off the road. We are building a coop and soon will acquire some much researched chickens.

While working on the coop, I saw a Red tail hawk flying overhead for days now then a second one showed up. I wondered if they were pairing up until I noticed one stalking my little Shih Tzu dog from an overhead tree. The dog weighs about 10 lbs and is blonde in color. I quickly broke that hawk's bad intentions by throwing rocks...but he is still out there.

We trapped a coon in my back yard tearing up my bird feeders by using a humane trap. He was not very appreciative of me trying to be humane. He tried to eat us through the cage...but his friends are still out there.

Wednesday night a bobcat attack my cat on my front porch. I thought it was a stray that got gutsy enough to come onto the porch when I also have 3 Border Collies. I heard the commotion and ran to the door to find my cat frantically running for cover leaving his fur and urine all over the concrete. Here is this large grey ratty kitty staring back at me. Not thinking I ran at it waving my arms like I was insane. It knew better than to mess with me because I looked really nuts. All of a sudden I realized what it was and I was really nutsas it bolted to get away from me...and yes he is still out there. My cat was only missing some fur but plenty shook up. WHEW!

We are going to the make this coop as predator proof as we can and visit the local gun shop and do some .22 shopping because all these predators are going to find out "I" am still out here!

That sounds just like something I would do! I live right up against the woods too. Hope you have luck with your coop. And fun thinning out pests with you .22.

We have a horrible bobcat & coyote population, hawks, bald eagles. We have lost ONE chicken, inside the coop. We think it was a weasle or rat. No feathers. Just a 1/2 bald bird with no innards.
