What kind of Puppy is This?

I agree it is cute and lord knows not every purebred dog looks like a purebred dog. A vet may be able to tell if you really want to know. Time will tell I'm sure. Had a mutt picked up on my mail route drop a litter of 10. Some looked like rotties, but when they grew some had really short legs. Nothing like the mother who was a lab mix I'm sure.

Just remember the same thing applies to babies as applies to puppies. "behind every bundle of joy, is a bundle of poop".

Hope your puppy brings you alot of joy and not so much poop.

I have a request and two points to make:

1. Though chocolate is a recessive color (meaning both parents either need to be chocolate or carry a copy of the chocolate gene), it's not an indication that the pup is purebred since other breeds, including pit bulls, can also have the chocolate gene.

2. Purebred Labs DO show up with white chest patches, to the point where it's even mentioned in the AKC standard: http://www.akc.org/breeds/labrador_retriever/index.cfm This puppy would be considered mismarked due to the size of the patch, but could still be purebred. Not very likely given the back story, but could.

Any other point I would make has already been made. My request is photos in a couple of months or so, when a mix would be more obvious. Assuming your friend brings the puppy home, of course.

Luckily (in this instance) she decided to forgo getting the dog.

If it had been a mix of pit bull, I'm afraid she and her family never would have fully been relaxed around the dog, always waiting for something to happen. Pit Bulls can be awesome dogs, I've met plenty of them, but if you're not prepared (especially with an unknown breed of dog and you're expecting a full Lab mentality) things can go south fairly quickly.

I'm sure the puppy will find a nice home but in the meantime, I am happy that it is not with my friend's family. I don't think it would have been a good match for the dog or for them.
