What kind of shoes do you wear to the hen house?

Don't have a coop yet but navigating my yard can be very treacherous. Heavy clay soil that retains a lot of moisture so after a rain the clay is slippery and in the winter Icy. Have a pair of wild wolfe hunting boots with huge tread on the heavy sole. I also like to be able to slip them on and off when I come in with my hands full. Even though they are a high top boot I have the laces knotted at the end and pull them back leaving the boot as far open at the top as they will open. Easy to slip into and out of. Also they are thinsulate lined so they are very warm in the winter even open. Used the same pair for the last 5 years (4 wheeling, Deer hunting, yard work, etc.) and they have held up very well. Manufactured by a company called Rocky. I bought them at our local D&R sporting goods store. Don't know if they still carry them or not.

The problem with things that you can slip one and off easy is the mud will gladly help you remove them just as you are taking a large step over something and on a day it's barely above freezing. Then you'll be headed back to the house to throw away a pair of socks, rinse the boot, and thaw your foot.

I replaced my slide on rubber mud boots with a good pair of waterproof hiking boots that lace tight.

Wear crocs in the summer and rain boots in the wet and winter. They sit at my back door ready to be slipped on at a moments notice.

Robin'sBrood :

I wear Crocs, and I leave them on the porch when I'm done.

I used to wear yellow crocs, the ducks wouldn't leave my feet alone!

My chickens will peck at my toes through the holes...especially if I am sock free.

even more so if you happen to polish those nails and they catch a peek through the holes

crocs by the back door... and yes- the holes with views to pink or red polished nails proves too tempting for inquisitive beaks- but they leave my toes alone in flip flops- go figure

With one pair of crew style cotton socks they are snug enough that (knock wood) I have never had that happen. Heavy knobby tread does make it difficult to clean off clay build up however.
