What kind of snake is it?

Open it's mouth. If it is black inside, it's a Black Mamba & you shouldn't have opened it's mouth! Nice Knowing ya!

It looks like a juvenile common water snake to me. Juveniles can be tricky, but I am going by what it looks like on its belly and the banding. Did you find near water? a stream or creek? Did it offer to bite when first caught?

He was one of the gentler snakes that I have found on our property, he did not try to do anything.
