Looks like a young rat snake. Here at my place (in Alabama) I've had both gray and black colors.
I kinda like having them around for rodent control. That is if the chickens dont get the snakes first. :)

Belly, pattern and head wrong for any kind of rat snake in Tx I’ve seen ...but I could be wrong I’m no expert but daddy lives in Tx and I used too...would see em all the time...

That's a rough earth snake! Entirely harmless.

However, if it HAD been a venomous snake, handling it could have gotten you bitten and potentially killed you. Please don't handle snakes you can't identify. And if you want to handle a snake, support its body a bit better and put less pressure on the head or you risk badly hurting it. No need to stress it many more than you have to.
Most excellent reply... I have handled quite a few snakes here in San Diego. BUT... I didn't touch anything I couldn't Identify.

Though I have relocated Rattle snakes... Carefully without touching them. Mostly I let em be and move on.

Anybody know what kind of snake this is?

It’s dark gray and has a white belly. Roughly 6-7 inches long.

Our chickens have eaten three of these and seem to be fine afterwards.

My only fear is if they can be bitten by such a small snake. I was able to pick it up no problem and the head is really small.

Earth snake as others have said. I love them. So cute. I see them in my yard every spring and I welcome them.

.

I fed my hens a ring necked snake the other day... they killed it, but didn’t like the taste so they didn’t eat it... one of them even up-chucked a bit...

The snake emitted a musk when I picked it up, I didn’t taste it, but according to the hens it didn’t taste too good!

I caught another the other evening when transplanting some flowers, and just walked it down the lane and turned it loose across the road.

I love the vote for Black Mamba! I sincerely hope you guys don’t get a feral population of those down there! :p But seriously, I agree, you want to learn to identify the venomous snakes in your area before you start picking things up!
