What kind of snake is this?

I just learned that Timber Rattlers are endangered in New Hampshire due to "hold my beer and watch this itism".

I found this fellow last week after four inches of rain fell over night. I figure he got swept up in the water and climbed up the fence to get out of the cold water.

My cats had this one surrounded. I got him in a bucket and brought him to the back of the pasture. I used to be terrified of snakes, and while I’m still scared, I realize their place in nature, so I try not to harm them. Still don’t want to touch them though...

I don't think it was a gopher snakes they have a different pattern
it might be a Sistrurus catenatus tergeminus (ground rattlesnake)

There are different types of gopher snakes with different patterns, sort of like how there are lots of different chickens.

i have a fear of snakes. good thing the only snake really around where i live are small garter snakes.

but very interesting to read other peoples opinions on them (even where there venomous)
