what kind of snake is this

The markings look like a rat snake. Although those markings also look like a common boa constrictor. So it could even been someones pet that got loose. Oh well snake for dinner tonight kids LOL!

If you still have the snake, look at the scales on the bottom (belly) side of the tail. If from the anus down they are parallel to each other it was a poisonous snake and likely a copperhead. If they overlap like a zipper, then it was probably either a corn snake or a rat snake. Since it was in your chicken pen, I'd go with rat snake.

They are fearsome looking creatures for sure unless your name is Steve Irwin R.I.P, I can just imagine him saying "Crikey, what a beauty"
Its hard to tell whether yours was a beneficial snake, though if you have small chicks in the pen, Id guess that any snake would have them for brekky.
I really like snakes though not in my backyard. We also have some of the most venomous snakes on this planet over here so I would probably not have been able to even try to hit him with a shovel. Id run to the phone and call wildlife rescue to come and relocate him.
Perhaps you can take him to a snakey type person or organisation who can positively ID this snake in case you get more.

I wouldn't mind having one in my yard, keeps the mice and stuff away. Then again I would probably rescue all the mice it tried to eat just because I'm like that. If my cats get a mouse then I can't let them kill it so I take it and put it out in the woods.
