I applaud all your efforts to be a good neighbor. It sounds like you've gone out of your way to show that you are not someone who would just start shooting. My husband has given our neighbors warnings to control their dogs or he would. They took him seriously. I wasn't taken so seriously. It seems they feel the problem isn't their dogs, it's my fear. When dogs develop a pack mentality I get fear.

we have a dog problem and cat problem. we catch all of them before anything happens. shot two cats, a possum, and several dogs.our neigbors dog killed alot of another neighbors chickens. one night it kille an entire flock of red jungle fowl and all his previous chickens. the red jungle fowl he brought up from and 8 hour drive that night

I'm going to add my 2 cents worth here.. Most of you people who may be judging the actions of a person who has lost livestock/poultry to a predator attack and that includes dogs, has no idea the range of emotions one goes through. Most counties across the U.S. allows for the 'farmer'/livestock owner to protect their animals which includes deadly force. When I heard a strange call from one of my chickens and looked out to see what was going on, and only saw a few of my chickens... I went to another window only to see a dog with my beautiful chicken pinned to the ground while the dog was tearing feathers out. I only wish I owned a gun at that moment as I ran out the door screaming at the dog who then dropped my chicken and ran out of the yard. My poor chicken laid there gasping and died in my arms as I picked her up.
I was hysterical, I called my husband and struggled to tell him through sobs what had happened. Then I went looking for that dog.. I found him two houses down running around. I went to confront the neighbor. Turns out the owner of the dog was only visiting and allowed her dog to run loose and she claimed she was watching her dog. I had taken pictures of my dead chicken and the mass of feathers on the ground as well as her dog leaving my yard and showed her what her dog did to my chicken. Her comment was "i'm gonna be sued" She was apologetic, and quickly put her dog in her car. She lived down the road and I told her when my husband got home he would talk to her as I was too upset to continue talking.
We ended up charging her $200 for the loss of eggs & chicken as the chicken had just started laying a month earlier. 2 years x $4 a carton - 1 month, along with a very strong warning that she better do everything in her power to keep her dog off our property for if that dog EVER stepped foot on our property he will be shot.

By the way, she still allows her dog to run loose.

So before you become judgmental, dont think for one moment the thought or action to shoot a dog for killing your birds would be beneath you, because if you are like 95% of people on here they are more than just egg layers, they are pets and part of the family.

Please keep this civil here people. I have cleaned up this thread a bit. I know you are all passionate about your birds. But lets keep it under control here while discussing this issue.

Thank you for your understanding!

Amen! Our birds deserve life just as much, if not more, than roaming malicious dogs. Dog owners need to be more responsible IMO.
