What kinds of quail can I legally own in the US without a permit?

I know that I can legally own Coturnix Quail and Button Quail without a permit, but are their any others? I've learned I can't own Bobwhite, Blue Scale, and California quail. Thx,

It depends on your state and local government.

Check with your local ag department. It varies from state to state. The general rule of thumb is, if it's native to the continent, you need a permit.

Frankly, native Quail require a completely different set up than button or cournitux, they require more than a whim to get. They are very good at spooking and killing themselves without the right set up and can be very aggressive to other Quail and can kill them.
TLDR, if you are struggling with buttons, don't get native quail.
