I would like to give my girls some vegetarian left overs like pasta salad which contain fat in the form of oil or mayonaise. My hubby thinks the fat dressing these carbs is harmful for the chickens. Any 'official' word?

Personally, I've given my chickens ALL my leftovers. For years and years. As chickens are omnivores, they are designed to eat fat, as well as meats and veggies. Chickens aren't designed to live on grain alone, just like people aren't.

Mine like leftover pasta salad. It doesn't only have to be vegetarian either. It takes a lot of protein to lay eggs.

I give leftovers as long as there is no salt. I also give them fruit almost daily. They love applesauce the best.

I give leftovers too, but sparingly. More than 10-15% of their diet and egg laying drops! So treats stay as treats, not regular diet.

I haven't found any food that hurts my chickens
